in Rerick, Germany in 1938. First solo exhibition in London,
England in 1959, New Vision Gallery. Collected world-wide, her
exhibition list includes: Gallery 44, Kaarst, Germany; Centre
Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Riva Yares Gallery, Scottsdale,
Monte Carlo Biennale, Monte Carlo; Gallery 1900-2000, Paris,
France; Miami Art Fair, Miami, Florida and the Nelson Center
for the Arts, Tempe, Arizona. Rotraut moved to Paradise Valley,
Arizona in 1982.
"This
is a story we humans have not really quite understood yet,"
Rotraut explains. "Sometimes we are far from it ... I
mean this directing things where you want them to go. Through
this experience of timelessness you receive the emotions and
energies that Yves Klein described as matiere premiere.
You enter into this matiere premiere', and it gives
you back the essence of matter, and it also speaks through
you and into you, simply out of the need to express it, or,
in my own case, to bring it out in the form of wood sculptures...
The sculpture is made of wood, and at first it looks completely
inert, but the moment comes when the figure emerges, a moment
whose particular energy configuration is contained in timelessness...
This emergence always remains, like a diagram, it is iust
there, in the line, as if a ghost, a phantom were present
and tangible..."
