Paintings for the Blind
Paintings
by Harold Laynor
Harold A. Laynor
(1922-1991), an artist and educator, created a number of tactile
paintings for visually impaired and blind individuals so that they
could enjoy the beauty of art. From 1956 to 1966, Laynor worked
as an associate of the New York State Education Department in art
education. While traveling about the State of New York, he met a
number of students interested in learning more about art. Although
visually impaired, the students enjoyed immersing themselves in
art projects and especially appreciated the work of others. To further
develop the interest in paintings for the viually impaired, Dr.
Laynor used this idea in teaching his art classes at Millersville
University in Pa. from 1966 to 1990. He also created a series of
"special paintings" which can be seen on this website.
The Laynor Foundation Museum has decided to sell
these remarkable paintings. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation
for Blind Children, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
help blind and visually impaired children and adults lead lives
of independence and dignity through mastery of their environment.
A percentage of the proceeds will also benefit the Laynor Foundation
Museum, also a nonprofit organization, which was established to award
scholarshipe to students who are pursuing careers in visual arts
and art education.
